- Province Impacted by Federal Disaster Assistance Cut - Nova Scotia stands to lose millions of dollars in federal disaster assistance because of a funding cut by the federal government. The Federal Government is raising the amount of storm damage needed to trigger federal disaster assistance from $1 million to $3 million. Changes to the disaster financial assistance program go into effect Feb. 1. Minister Furey indicated that eight of the last fourteen storms dating back to 1999 would not qualify under the new threshold. That would amount to a $20 million loss to the Province of Nova Scotia," Furey told CBC News. Nova Scotia has applied to the program 14 times in the past 15 years. Ottawa is also introducing a National Disaster Mitigation Program of $200 million over five years. Public Safety Canada said it will create the conditions for the introduction of residential flood insurance in Canada.
